Secret Recipe Revealed! Fun With Vodka and Gin

by Nick 25. March 2009 03:40

I can't go into the back history on this one, according to our highly paid and well-manicured legal staff. All I can tell you is that there was a time where this drink was very heavily favored with my crew, and once the supplies became readily available we took any chance we could to bust out this old favorite recipe.

The drink is called The C*mshot. I'll be lucky if I can get that by my bosses over here at the Cabinet, but once you understand the mix, you'll understand the name. And as long as your crew is of legal age, you might be able to tell them the name without giggling. I don't know that, for sure. I'm 27 and I still giggle.

First things first, we need some vodka. The first time we did this, we had a bottle of Kappy's vodka and a dream. What could we add to this that would make it actually taste good? At this point, I wasn't too familiar with what goes well with what. I knew I liked pretty much anything in cola or sprite, and that clear liquor was usually better for mixing. My dark rum experiments never went very well, but I'm an adventurer!

So, I go to my liquor cabinet and get out the standards; Kahlua and Bailey's Irish Creme. Mudslide? That would take the edge off the Kappy's, but it was kinda boring.

Then it hit me.

First, my eye caught the chocolate ice cream. Hm.

Fine, but nothing too drastic.

Chocolate liqueur? Sure, why not. What's a few more calories, we're living it up!

Here's the kicker: If you want to add a little Sambuca, you can. But you need to be really careful with how much you use. Sambuca has an overpowering taste and can easily blow this. I would say half a shot to every blender.

Last but not least, any CLEAR gin. You're thinking "Vodka with gin, that's gross!!!" and I know, it should be. Juniper berries aside, there's NO difference between them, though. And let's be honest, who is tasting anything other than chocolate here. This goes back to my inexperience with mixing drinks when this was concocted. We happened to run out of vodka and so we went with the closest thing we could find; a bottle of clear gin. I don't remember what kind we initially used, but nowadays we get Beefeater : ) I didn't say this was a high-class drink, I said it tastes great. Sure, you could load it with Vodka and Sambuca, but this is about presentation, folks. Plus, if you so choose to substitute chocolate ice cream with strawberry, you'll have an excuse to use gin.

So anyways, vodka and gin, equal parts (4-5 shots of each for us), to your liking in a blender. I like ice cream, so I add 6 scoops. Half a shot of 'buca, half a shot of chocolate liqueur. 2 shots of Bailey's, 2 shots of Kahlua, hit that frappe button. Add milk if you added too much ice cream, but be careful not to "milk" it down. You want it to be strong enough to serve in shots.

Serve it in shot glasses or as mixed drinks in tall glasses. Personally, I think shot glasses are more fun, and of course that's the namesake. However, if your liking wasn't the 8+ shots we recommend, drinking this mix in shot glasses will be the equivalent of eating McDonald's with the good china.

Give this a shot and hit us up with some feedback! Enjoy a C*mshot today!

How Do I Like My Rum? Flavored, Light, Dark and Spiced

by Nick 20. March 2009 15:02

I like rum, as the title implies.

I especially like rum and *your brand of cola here if you send me some!*. I'm not gonna go back on the Ice 101, but it's good to change the pace every once in a while. Sometimes, it's just not a shot night and shots of rum are not my thing.

My former favorite flavored rum was...

Captain Morgan® Parrot Bay...   straight up..   but it hit me wrong once and it made for a night I'll never forget, in all the wrong ways.

Then I found Bacardi Limon, the light rum of the gods. As far as flavored rums go, Limon stands alone.

Bacardi Limon, the mainstay for at least two years of my early life. As you may have gathered, I usually pick a drink and stick with it. Limon and *Citrus Soda*, Limon and *Cola*, Limon straight up; next to vodka, this is my highest recommended bottle to have for emergency purposes.  You can use it with anything but milk-based mixes (gross) or serve it straight up, preferably ice cold. (That's another recurring theme. Most of the liquors I prefer stay in the freezer.)

Not too long into the Limon Era I discovered the other types of rums. Captain Morgan was finally off the hook, although I am permanently turned off by the smell of coconut in liquor or otherwise.  Parrot Bay will never happen again, but the original Captain Morgan Spiced Rum with *Premium Cola* (I really want them to send me some soda) remains a popular choice.  Easy to mix and vary for preference; a bottle of Morgan should go on your Shelf, in your Cabinet, and definitely into your emergency kit with the vodka and Limon! There are other spiced rums that could save you a buck or two, but you really do get what you pay for when it comes to liquor. Have you ever had Kappy's Vodka?

As far as rum recipes go, I don't have enough. If you have a recipe idea, hit the feedback form and we'll get it up here and give you props if it doesn't suck! If it does, we'll just make fun of you.

Ice 101 - Schnapps With Sack

by Nick 20. March 2009 08:04
Now, I hear this all the time. "Schnapps is a girly drink."

Before the ladies give me a hard time, it's a figure of speech. I know some girls that will vodka shot any guy to death, so bear with me here.

I tend to agree, most schnapps is low proof and tend to take an entire liter to the face to catch a buzz. At that point, you might as well drink beer and save yourself from the extra sugar intake.

But Ice 101® is not most schnapps. From my first experience with it in high sc-...when I turned 21...it has always been my favorite, by and large. It is my automatic comeback to anyone that criticizes my flavor of choice.

"What is that, peppermint schnapps?" they say in the condescending way I've grown accustomed to. But once I persuade them to down a shot, I know I've added a minion to my Ice 101® army.

Ice 101® is the best tasting hard alcohol I've come across, and easily the best tolerated. Usually when I lock onto a favorite, I take it too far one night and end up wishing it away. Southern Comfort, Parrot Bay; even screwdrivers all held the top spot on my list before some magical evening when I forget what my tolerance level is and end up curled up on the floor swearing I'll never drink again.

Well, the truth is, I end up never drinking that again.

But Ice 101® is different. It has yet to ever put me down for the count. It has such a clean, crisp vibe. You may get hammered, but in my experience it has never made me feel lousy, even when I occasionally overdid it.

My reasoning is (and I am not a doctor or scientist, this is just my opinion based on nothing but experience) the high proof keeps you from feeling full before the buzz settles in. One or two shots of Ice 101® brings the ruckus faster than anything I've experienced, and I don't know if it's the temperature I serve it (from the freezer to the shot glass) or the peppermint flavor, but it feels like it chills your core. Tequilas and vodkas always make me feel like I'm on fire, and I'm not saying that Ice 101® won't warm up your belly, but the buzz that comes with it is cold and clean.

When I describe drinking Ice 101® to friends, I tell them that I equate it to absinthe. Yes, it's a liquor, and yes, the core "drug" is alcohol, but it hits you in a unique way that makes you feel better than the liquors you're used to.

Also, Ice 101® is a crowd-pleaser. In my experience, there are two types of hard liquor drinkers: high-proof "puts some hair on your chest" folk and people that are looking for something that looks like a shot but tastes like candy so they can hang with the aforementioned hairy chest folk. This appeals to both kinds! It's tasty, but it's flammable!
